United Cricket Club: A Legacy of Passion, Perseverance, and Growth

Founded in 1999, the Chicago-based United Cricket Club has been at the forefront of promoting cricket in the United States as a registered 501(c) nonprofit organization. What started as a diverse group of IT professionals, doctors, small business owners, and students coming together to compete in the Midwest Cricket Conference has evolved into a cricketing powerhouse that has played a pivotal role in growing the sport across the region.

Early Struggles and Breakthrough Moments
From 1999 to 2001, United Cricket Club fought relentlessly for a playoff spot, recruiting top talent to strengthen its squad. Under the leadership of Adnan Baig, the club’s first captain, they endured multiple seasons of hard-fought battles before embarking on a Cinderella run in 2002, ultimately reaching the Midwest Cricket Conference Division I Final. Although falling short by 47 runs, this experience ignited a passion for excellence, leading to finals appearances in 2003 and 2004.

The club underwent significant transformations in 2005, welcoming new leadership under Captain Mehul Shani and the arrival of Amit Joshi, a professional cricketer from India, whose expertise propelled United Cricket Club into a historic playoff run—turning a 1-6 record midseason into an improbable semifinal appearance.

Milestone Achievements & Elite Talent

United Cricket Club continued to cement its reputation, with Adnan Baig earning the MVP trophy in 2006, finishing as one of the league’s top batsmen, while Samarth Shah emerged as a feared left-arm spinner, capturing his 200th wicket and earning recognition at the USACA’s West Zone Championship in 2009.

Between 2007 and 2008, the club experienced a golden era, signing first-class cricketers from India, including Kiran Kumar Sangani and Srinivas Mangalpally, along with the return of star performers like Amit Joshi and Abhijit Joshi. The squad dominated the league, with Faisal Baig emerging as the top batsman, ultimately leading the club to its MWCC Division I Championship title in 2008.

That same season, United Cricket Club elevated its profile on the global stage, with high-profile players such as Pakistan Test cricketer Faisal Iqbal and Indian U-19 star Mohammad Saif joining the team. Their presence attracted international attention, turning United Cricket Club into a preferred destination for top-tier players worldwide.

Impact Beyond the Field : Beyond its competitive success, United Cricket Club has remained committed to grassroots development and community impact. In 2006, the club partnered with Cricket Sporting Academy to launch youth camps led by former Australian captain Greg Chappell, providing young players with world-class coaching. Similarly, in 2007, the club collaborated with Karsan Ghavri, former Indian national player, to prepare for Central East Zone tournaments.

Under Mehul Shani’s leadership, Chicago United made a memorable debut in L.A. Open 2007, with national-level players from USA and Trinidad & Tobago joining the squad. They made headlines by defeating a star-studded Australian All-Stars team, narrowly missing the quarterfinals.

The club’s off-field efforts have been equally impactful, raising over $3,000 for earthquake relief efforts, reinforcing its mission to use cricket as a vehicle for positive change.
